Metadata in the music industry are data that contain information about a music piece, but are not part of the actual audio material.

This includes details such as title, artist name, album, release year, genre, lyricist and composer.

Metadata play an essential role in cataloging, searching, and identifying music in both physical and digital formats. Especially in digital distribution, they ensure that music pieces are correctly recognized and attributed to the right creators.
